  Yar'Adua: Governors back Jonathan

By Anule Emmanuel, Abuja

Governors of the 36 states of the Federation have unanimously thrown their wait behind the call that President Umaru Yar’Adua should transfer powers to Vice President Goodluck Jonathan in acting capacity.
The Governors who were at the presidential villa Abuja on a solidarity visit to the vice president this was the only way to solve the present constitutional crisis bothering on the President’s absence from the country.
Governor Buloka Saraki of Kwara who is chairman of the governors Forum, and Godswill Akpabio his Akwa Ibom state counterpart, while speaking to state house correspondents said the decision was in the best interest of the nation.
According to the Governors, the constitution of the country has provided no vacuum for the position of the President and the continued absence of the President remains detrimental to the economic and political stability of the country.
The governors after making  their position clear on the matter said they would be moving to the National Assembly (Nass)  next week to press home their resolve which is to see that the legislature pass a resolution ensuring that the vice president assume the position of acting President pending the return of President Yar’Adua.
“We associate ourselves with the recent Court ruling concerning the President and the vice President. We now agreed to meet with the leadership of the National Assembly to urge them to pass a resolution recognizing the Vice President as the acting president of the nation.
Governor Liyel Imoke of Cross River State who quoted the constitution said  “Section 145 of the 1999 Constitution is subject to interpretation and it has recently been interpreted in the court and what we cannot do is to question the judgment until such a time another judgment is obtained.
He continued that the judgment of the Court remains the position, and until that time, the Vice-President can act. “ It is also very clear now that section 145 starts with whenever, it does not start with any other word, other than the word whenever”.
“In the event that the transmission does not occur, certain actions can be taken to guarantee the stability of the nation,” he added.
Vice President Goodluck has since received the position of the Governors forum with excitement and is waiting the reaction of the National Assembly.
